Rewriting metadata rather than just filepaths?

For certain artists, I would like to use the romanization of their names. I have tried using the rewrite plugin:

plugins: 
    - musicbrainz
    - rewrite

rewrite:
    albumartist 不可逆ハードコアReturns: Hukagyaku Hardcore Returns

However it seems that this plugin only affects file paths when organizing with beets, not the actual metadata that is written to the file when using a tag source like MusicBrainz. It still writes the (non-rewritten) album artist to the files.

Alternatively, I would like to be able to at least ignore specific metadata changes. When I get the prompt to apply the new metadata, it seems there are only two options when importing the album:

1. Accept all metadata changes
2. Import without changing any metadata (use as-is)

It would be nice if I could ignore only the edit

  ≠ Artist: Hukagyaku Hardcore Returns -> 不可逆ハードコアReturns

while still performing the other operations (like setting musicbrainz id).
